Summary of October 17, 2005 Board of Education Meetings

Carol Carstensen, President, Board of Education

The Board had an informative discussion with a number of parent group representatives on Monday, Oct. 17.  One suggestion was to provide regular communication about Board discussions and actions.  I will attempt to provide a weekly  or biweekly  brief update of what happened at Board meetings and what is scheduled in the near future.

First some communication information:
  1. Use:  comments@madison.k12.wi.us to reach all Board members, as well as the Superintendent and other top administrator (or reply to me at the email in the from line).
  2. www.mmsd.org the district's web site has a wealth of information; you can sign up to receive regular notification of the Board's meetings.
  3. On the web site, clicking on Long Range Planning will get you to the page with all the information on the East and West/Memorial task forces  agenda's, minutes and all material given to task force members.
Other meetings on 10/17:
Legislative Committee:
had a presentation by Tom Beebe of the Wisconsin Alliance for Excellent Schools (WAES).  A statewide organization that is lobbying for reform of the current system of state funding for public schools.  The Legislative Committee voted to recommend that the Board and district join WAES.  This will come before the Board at our Nov. 8 meeting.  You can learn more about WAES at:  www.excellentschools.org
Finance and Operations Committee:
  1. heard presentations from several community organizations who provide after school and Saturday programs for school age students:  Urban League, Centro Hispano, African American Ethnic Academy and Bootstrap.  All of these programs are funded through the Community Service levy (Fund 80)  which is no longer under the revenue cap.
  2. discussed the entire array of fees that students and families are charged  (e.g.  textbooks, instruments, athletics, 4th & 5th
grade strings, etc.).  There will be a future discussion on possible increases.
