Carol Carstensen, President, Board of Education

The Board met on October 31 (we felt the community was safer if Board members were not out trick-or-treating; they can be so scary!!).  Here's a brief summary of what occurred.
The Human Resources Committee met to discuss the 20005-06 evaluation of the Superintendent.  Juan Lopez, chair, provided a list of possible goals for discussion.  The Committee also looked at the total evaluation process  and, based on the comments of some Board members, decided that further discussion was necessary before adopting a final list of goals.

The evaluation, as laid out in the Superintendent's contract has 3 parts:  1) a set of goals agreed to by the Superintendent and the Board (to the extent possible the goals are to be measurable); 2) an evaluation of the Superintendent's performance in 5 areas:  planning, organizing, leading, supervising, and job knowledge; and 3) a survey of those reporting directly to the Superintendent and a random selection of other administrators.

The Board's meeting (termed a Special Session) dealt with two issues:
  1. Expungement Policy   currently, students who have been expelled, but who had no prior, or further, discipline issues  and who maintained a good academic and attendance record  may petition the Board near the end of the junior year to expunge (= remove) the record of the expulsion.  The Board was concerned whether about the fairness of this policy  and to what extent it penalized students who may have made mistakes in their middle school years  but really improved in high school.  The Board asked for data on how many students are currently eligible but don't apply for expungement  and how many are not eligible based solely on having had discipline issues prior to the expulsion.
  2. Equity Policy Task Force  the Board approved creating a task force composed of 3 adults and one student from each of the 4 high school attendance areas to look at the broad issue of equity within the district and recommend an equity policy to the Board.  The task force will:  look at the district's current policy; consider the process for allocating resources; review equity policies from other districts; listen to community members and Board members before making recommendations.
  3. Community members are encouraged to volunteer for this task force, in addition Board members may recommend individuals.  I will be sending out more information about this shortly  but do let me know if you, or someone you know, would like to serve.
