Child Find Preschool Screenings

All the instructors were very fun and engaging, and our daughter had no idea that this was a 'test'. She had a ball and we got really good information."

Ann Giroux, parent

Ann Giroux's daughter was one of 27 children who participated in the MMSD Group Child Find preschool screening held at Lapham Elementary School on January 9th.

Child Find screenings are MMSD's response to federal and state mandates to locate, identify and evaluate children between the ages of 3 and 5 years with disabilities within its attendance area.

The screenings are designed to:

  • Provide information to parents and caregivers regarding the child's development.
  • Provide resources to families regarding child development and activities.
  • Support connections with families and other community service providers.
  • Generate a referral for a Special Education Evaluation (IDEA IEP evaluation), if indicated.

Currently, two approaches to the screening are used:

  • The parent is asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding the child's behavior and skills
  • A tool (the DIAL) is administered and used to screen the areas of language, motor and early concept skills.

The screening results are shared with parents immediately following the screening. If a child appears to be developing typically, the family is provided with tips and tools about child development. If a child appears to have delays, the parents are asked to consider initiating an IDEA IEP evaluation.

Families which have participated in the screening indicate that the children were excited to "go to school" for the screening.

Anyone from the community with concerns about a preschool-aged child's development can make a referral for screening by phoning 663-8471.

The next screening is scheduled for Monday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2096 Red Arrow Trail. For a reservation or more information, call 663-8471.
