Happy 90th Birthday, Mr. Toki!

Alison Brown, Toki Middle School

What better way to celebrate than with over 800 people?

  • Let's make cupcakes! (648 were made and we had a full sheet cake)
  • Let's make cards! (hard to give an exact count there were so many)
  • Let's make a movie! (it was a video of students interviewing Mr. Toki)
  • Let's all sing! (and there were over 800 voices singing in unison)
  • Let's make sure everyone knows about our school's namesake!

Answers abounded in the week long Toki Trivia Contest:

  • Mr. Toki was born here and his was the first Japanese family in Madison
  • He is a very courageous man who got a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for service in the U.S. Army in WWII
  • He has dealt with prejudice in his life and done so with dignity
  • He is a great loyal American who still volunteers three days a week at the Veteran's Hospital!

Toki's goals in celebrating were to honor Mr. Toki, to increase students' awareness/knowledge of Mr. Toki and to celebrate as a school community.

We all enjoyed Mr. Toki's smiling personality and humor throughout the celebration of this momentous occasion! We are proud and delighted to have as our school's namesake this exceptional individual who has set a wonderful example in his life for all of us.
