News and information for staff members and the Madison community
Vol. I No. 4 - February 17, 2006
Budget Factoid:
Both the district's Operating Budget and the Community Service (Fund 80)
Budget have a Contingency Reserve. Money set aside to deal with unexpected
needs during the year (e.g. increase in gas prices, increased enrollment
requiring additional staff, etc.). These funds are part of the tax levy.
The proposals (see below under Regular Board Meeting) from community
organizations to provide new and creative programs for students after
school would be funded from money in the Community Service Contingency
Reserve.
5:15 p.m. Performance & Achievement Committee (Shwaw Vang,
chair):
report on 2005 summer school; summer school continues to expand and serve a
greater number of needs. Over the last several years, the district has
arranged to have MSCR provide afternoon recreational experiences so that
children can attend academic programs in the morning, have lunch and then
be involved in recreation a full day of creative and engaging programming.
The Committee supported the proposed budget for the 2006 summer school.
6 p.m. Special Board Meeting:
the administration provided the Board with a diagram of a proposed smaller
addition to Leopold that would cost about $2.8 million. This addition
would build a new cafeteria and remodel the interior spaces occupied by the
old library and cafeteria into more useable space. It would also put in a
window well to provide natural light to 4 classrooms off the old cafeteria.
The Board asked for information about funding alternatives for this option
and indicated a desire for feedback from the staff and families at
Leopold.
7:15 p.m. Regular Board Meeting:
The Board approved spending unallocated funds in the Fund 80 Contingency
Reserve to support two programs designed by community organizations to
provide additional supports to spur academic achievement by students of
color; two other programs were unable to get the necessary five votes and
will be considered during the discussions of the 2006-07 budget. The two
that were approved were programs developed by the Wisconsin Center for
Academically Talented Youth (WICATY) and the Charles Hamilton Houston
Institute, Inc.
