Vol. I No. 5 - March 29, 2006
The Madison School District's Comprehensive Summer School Program has proven to be a successful intervention for attending students by increasing their academic skills, providing credit recovery for high school students and by providing safe, appropriate enrichment and recreational activities.
In the summer of 2005, Extended Learning Summer School -- Kindergarten Ready through 8th grade -- served a total of 1,600 students in academic classes. Over 90% of these students also participated in MSCR afternoon programs.
There were 880 students participating in the various enrichment classes.
The high school program served a total of 1,132 students with 95% of the students earning credit and 73 students completing graduation requirements.
Summer School requires a unique level of cooperation and communication between the various systems, departments and staff in the MMSD. Many departments — Transportation, Research and Evaluation, Educational Services, Teaching and Learning, Human Resources, MSCR, Food Services, Building Services and all of the building level school year staff -- work to identify appropriate students and get them successfully participating in summer school.
Currently, the planning and hiring for Summer School 2006 is well under way. For Extended Learning Summer School, students will again be identified at the end of the third quarter. Invitation letters will be sent out during the week of April 24 to families of those students qualifying.
School staff will work closely with qualifying students and their families to get all enrollment information to Research and Evaluation by May 15.
Kindergarten Ready enrollment has already begun with the completion of the screening process at Mendota Elementary School.
