Word tip: Using your right mouse button

Mark Evans, director of Technical Services

20060327.tech01There are many mysteries in life. To many people, these mysteries include, why their computer's mouse has both a left and right side that clicks when you press it. Fortunately, we are able to shed some light on this terribly perplexing concern.

It is true that you can get by, doing almost anything on your computer, by just clicking on the left. (This, for those of you wishing to know the full term in TechSpeak, is called "left clicking".) You can open stuff, close stuff, select stuff, and otherwise demonstrate Free Will, in a wide variety of situations, just by left clicking.

Alas, the mystery of the "right click" can seem most obscure. Yet penetrating this mystery can greatly enrich your life, or at least make some things you do on your computer, much easier!

20060327.tech02For example, you are typing along in Word and you get the funky jagged red line under a word. (This never happens to me. I'm just giving this example.) So, Word is telling you, you likely mispeld the word. Just by having the cursor (talk to it nicely) over the word and right clicking, alternative word choices are displayed. (In TechSpeak, this is called "waycool," or just, "way".)

By clicking on the word you like within the drop-down box, it's auto-replaced in your text. This is only the beginning! Right click on some other word... I right clicked on the word, "Fortunately" in 1st paragraph, and had a drop down box that included a link to Synonyms. Yep. I could have used the word "auspiciously," or maybe used "happily." Now you're getting excited, aren't you?

Try selecting Translate and check that out. Another thing I like to do is use Hyperlink. I can then link some select text in my Word file to link another file or a Web site that I want others who share my document to be able to see. That's way.

Soon, you'll be right clicking a lot more often and discover a richness in your life you never expected. Who knows, maybe you'll even be a more balanced person.
