AERO = Alternative Education Resource Options
|
In the spring and summer of 2003, plans were made to support the educational needs of a new group of MMSD students. Over 100 retained 8th graders attended summer school promotion classes that summer because they had failed to meet the criteria to pass to 9th grade. About 90% of these students were promoted based on their summer school experience. Anticipating a need for programming for retained 8th graders, the AERO program was developed. AERO is one of four programs of the Affiliated Alternatives School. AERO consists of a two-class center dedicated to building relationships with students/families and community to engage in the acquisition of academic skills, positive attendance patterns and a strong school work ethic necessary for success. It provides a small, supportive learning environment. AERO enrolls students who have been retained in 8th grade and have not been successful in the summer school promotion class. Students who are seeking a small, alternative setting for their freshman year of high school also enroll. The goal for all students in AERO is to develop the positive school behaviors and academic skills to succeed in high school. Students who are retained 8th graders are accelerated through the curriculum and are typically promoted to the 9th grade by the end of the first quarter. First year ninth grade students benefit from a smaller learning environment which emphasizes the development of student accountability. Students are able to earn the typical freshman credits for Health, Physical Education, Science, Algebra, English 9, Social Studies 9, and elective classes such as Technology. The AERO staff work closely with the four comprehensive high schools and Shabazz School to transition students successfully to 10th grade. Some highlights of the AERO experience include:
AERO Department Chair Jill Olsen has been with the AERO program "from the ground up". Her extensive teaching experience across many content areas, along with her skill of integrating technology and adventure education, have led to a highly successful program where students experience personal success and academic achievement. Jill teams with Janice Lange-Morris, Beth Lynch and various support staff to guide these energetic learners on the path toward high school graduation. Students who are struggling 8th graders may complete a referral to the AERO program for the 2006-2007 school year by contacting their middle school guidance counselor. ALL ENROLLING STUDENTS must have an interview and parent conference prior to starting classes at AERO. An AERO Information meeting for prospective families will be held on Thursday, May 18 from 6 — 7:00 pm at the school, 15 S. Brearly Street. Real quotes about AERO from real kids and families:
