Recent bill signings/vetoes

The following is a list of education-related bills the governor has signed or vetoed in April

Senate Bills

SB-68 — would have allowed lapsed SAGE contract money to be used for special education funding. Veto message.

SB-618 — Increases the number of available slots in the Milwaukee voucher program to 22,500, requires voucher schools to receive accreditation to participate and boosts the SAGE grant to all participating schools from $2,000 per low-income student to $2,250 beginning with the 2007-08 school year.

Assembly

AB-84 — Eliminated the 180 days of school requirement, but retained the required number of hours of instruction. The bill would have allowed bargaining around the issue of extending the school day, and attending school fewer days. Vetoed.

AB-114 — Allows for the creation of single-sex public or charter schools.

AB-152 — Would have allowed more resources for the Common School Fund (library aid) to be retained by counties from fines and forfeiture collections. Vetoed.

AB-308 — Establishes a clearinghouse for information about special education transition services.

AB-309 — Requires instruction in marriage and parental responsibility for any school district with a human growth and development program.

AB-589 — Requires the Department of Public Instruction to provide information about meningococcal disease to parents of pupils in grades 6 to 12.

AB-730 — Would allow the creation of independent charter schools established by University of Wisconsin institutions. Vetoed.

AB-829 — Expands the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program to include provision of services to students from 4-year-old kindergarten to grade 6 in public elementary schools, charter schools, and private schools that participate in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program and expanding the definition of volunteer health care.

AB-1060 — Eliminated the requirement that school districts be reimbursed for Virtual charter schools. Veto message.
