Fit Kids Challenge for the summer
|
The summer months can be a chance for children to kick their activity into high gear. The Fit Kids Challenge helps them do just that. The Fit Kids Challenge is an educational opportunity for children to learn the fundamentals about physical activity and nutrition. This free summer program has been designed to encourage children to move and to have a healthy lifestyle that will continue for a lifetime. Through participation in the Fit Kids Challenge, children will be motivated to build endurance, increase self-confidence, and learn to reach goals. Each participant receives a log form which is divided into approximately 100 squares. Each square represents one hour of physical activity. The goal is to complete 100 hours or more of physical activity over the summer, when children may lack structured activity. In addition to the log, children will also receive kid-friendly monthly e-newsletters with recipes, local active events and health tips. The highlight of the program is the party on top of the Monona Terrace on Saturday September 9, 2006. All youth are invited to join in the Fit Kids Run around the Capitol that finishes on the Ironman finish line. Following the run, free food, games, face painting and other activities will be available at the celebration at the Terrace. Brochures were distributed to Madison elementary schools during the week of May 1. Support and encouragement from teachers can motivate students to participate in this program. You are an integral part of this fitness movement as the Madison Metropolitan School District is a partner in the Fit City Madison Initiative. By encouraging your students to participate in this program you are helping to fight the battle of the bulge in our youth. More brochures and details are available online at www.fitkidschallenge.com. The program is targeted to K-6 students, but anyone is welcome. Please help get our youth active by motivating your students to take the Fit Kids Challenge. Return to MMSD Today |
