Multi-year grant to combat AOD and violence in schools culminates with major accomplishments districtwide

Joan Lerman and Bonnie Augusta, Department of Student Services

Since the 2000-2001 school year, Madison Metropolitan School District has received grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education to provide AOD/violence prevention resource teachers in 18 schools. During these six years, 22 people have served in these positions. These staff people helped to bring attention to the wide range of issues and concerns that individual schools exhibited in these areas.

All schools participated in a needs assessment which helped determine the activities and projects that were implemented. Examples include: school-wide harassment surveys, focus groups with students, parents and staff, parent resource guide, Fear-Not/b2a, Africa Project, Parent programming including Straight Talk Series/Internet Safety, Bullyproofing/ Caring Community, Week of the Young Woman, Dating Violence, M.E.N.S. group, Staff PAC classes on AOD/Violence Prevention, Peaceful Playgrounds, research-based curriculum for students, and many additional activities.

To celebrate these major accomplishments, and to acknowledge the hard work of all the staff involved, a gathering was held on May 16, 2006 (pictured).

Although grant funding is ending, many activities, projects and initiatives and their impact will continue for many years to come.
