News and information for staff members and the Madison community
Vol. I No. 7 - June 2, 2006
Teacher appreciation week was May 8-12th. The "MMSD Today" staff in the Public Information office asked schools across the district to share how staff were recognized throughout the week.
Leopold Elementary Leopold celebrated last week along with the PFO. The PFO hosted a beautiful luncheon for the Leopold staff. The buffet was beautifully presented in the library... and the food was wonderful. Staff came in to enjoy their lunch between 10:30-1:00. There were treats in our lounge and in mailboxes on the other days.
Lincoln Elementary May 8th was Lincoln's all day SIP day. Nicki Miller, school secretary, prepared malts/milkshakes during the day for all staff which she decorated with a fancy cookie and a cool note of appreciation tied to the straws given out for the shakes. She wheeled them down on a cart and brought them in to our meeting to enjoy together during our afternoon break. One of our BRS, who is also a published Latina poet, wrote the following poem for our staff as well.
For All Those Days
Written by Nydia Rojas
When you woke up wondering
about your students' future
And for those times when you
managed to harvest a smile
from that "difficult child"
For all that patience it took
to get a student to learn the art
of telling time or make a graph
Thank you, today.... And always
Marquette Elementary Staff Appreciation Week at Marquette brought many treats and surprises this year. Joy Larson, principal, and Kim Shintine, school secretary, recognized the whole staff during this week. Each day included a special treat: Monday - staff received business card sized bookmark with the story of the little red wagon on it and a minature candy bar. Tuesday - treats in the lounge. Wednesday - staff received a Marquette note pad in the mailboxes and the PTG had a great luncheon, Thursday - staff members received a purple pen with Marquette imprinted on it. Friday - the culmination of the week brought a big surprise. Hats. Each staff member received a white hat with the Marquette Mustang on the front and the school's name on the back. These were a big hit (pictured).

Schenk Elementary Pictured are some teachers at Schenk during its teacher appreciation luncheon. They are toasting with their shark (school mascot) can coolers they received as gifts. PTA suggested little tokens of appreciation for students to give to their teachers throughout the week, including handwritten notes, apples, a piece of chocolate, etc. and then the week culminated with a luncheon. Teachers enjoyed pizza and soda, along with some goodies that parents brought contributed. Sennett Middle This was perhaps the most special teachers' celebration we've experienced in Sennett's history. This year we rejoice in 30 successful years of our multi-age model. The kickoff for this celebration actually started last month as we hosted a silent auction banquet at the East Side Businessmen's Association. It was quite profitable and well-attended by staff, parents, former staff, business owners, neighbors, friends, employers, and even former students...some of whom provided lovely musical interludes.
For students, our active student council showed their appreciation by getting the whole school involved. Each day was a dress up day (Crazy Hair Day, Hat Day, School Color Day, Shorts & Skirts Day, Backwards Day--the schedule was basically reversed--and Favorite Outfit Day). On our special day, staff proudly wore their 30-year celebratory T-shirt, some of whom gathered for the attached picture. In addition, daily announcements and class discussions provided students with the history of our building, and of the changes in education over the 30 years. Current teachers who attended Sennett as students personalized some of these! The week culminated on an atypically, as of late, school-wide picnic lunch on our lawn!
