In Wisconsin, people say there are two seasons, winter and construction. It is similar in Madison schools, only the seasons are school and construction. The Building Services Department has roughly three months to complete $9 million in maintenance and renovation work. Accounting for holidays and weekends, that is only 59 work days.

Building Services does more than focus on the unseen infrastructure of a school. National studies indicate the appearance of a school has an impact on staff and students' attitudes and may impact student performance.

Some more visible projects include re-painting the cupola at West. The parents donated money to gold leaf the finial on top of the cupola. The East high patio area will repair roof leaks and create a functional gathering place for students and staff. The Sandburg Elementary parking lot project repairs an old broken parking lot and paves a gravel area used for parking. We are also adding security lighting and more paved walkways.
