News and information for staff members and the Madison community
Vol. II No. 1 - October 19, 2006
Six Madison schools are among the 149 schools named as New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Black Hawk, Cherokee, Sennett and Toki Middle Schools and Leopold and Lowell Elementary Schools earned the distinction by meeting objective criteria that identify schools which are creating a learning climate that helps all children succeed. No other school district had more schools earn this honor.
"Congratulations to the students, staff and families at these six schools because it takes a lot of hard work from all of these groups to qualify for this recognition," said Superintendent Art Rainwater.
To be recognized, schools must be eligible to receive federal Title I funding and be among the highest poverty schools in the state based on free and reduced-price school lunch data. Additionally, student achievement must be above the state average for similar schools in both reading and mathematics, based on statewide assessments, and the school must have made adequate yearly progress for the past two years.
The schools will receive a recognition plaque at an October 10 ceremony at the State Capitol and $1,000 for use by the school.
As part of the day's celebration of the New Wisconsin Promise event, Madison principals posed with the state superintendent. Libby Burmaster; Joe Gothard, Toki MS; Karen Seno, Cherokee MS; Lisa Kvistad, Lowell El, and Mary Manthey, Leopold El.
