'Give Kids a Smile' addresses acute dental needs of MMSD students
|
Dentists in Dane county are stepping forward again this year to treat tooth decay in local low-income children and help "Give Kids a Smile." Tooth decay goes untreated in up to 70% of children in some segments of the Dane County population, and it can lead to severe pain and other complications. To address this acute need, 76 Dane County dentists are taking part in a local Give Kids a Smile campaign, part of a national effort that has provided free dental care to thousands of low-income children across the country. Dentists in this program offer free dental cleaning, dental sealants and restorative treatment to children who otherwise would have no dental care. Children will be visiting dentists for appointments at various times and locations this fall, and in 2007 during the months of March, April and May. Last school year, 164 children were seen, and over $100,000 worth of dental care was provided by the 76 participating dentists. MMSD school nurses and social workers play a vital role by identifying children who are in need of dental care. The school personnel coordinate each child's initial and follow-up appointments with the help of the dental office staff. United Way, a member of the Dane County Health Council Dental Access Subcommittee, has provided funding to coordinate the program and arrange transportation for families to and from the appointments. The Madison School District coordinates volunteer interpreters who assist Spanish-speaking children and parents at their visits. Delta Dental Insurance, Axley Brynelson law firm, and pharmaceutical company Ora Pharma have also contributed to the program. The community partners who planned this local initiative include Dane County Dental Society, Public Health — Madison and Dane County, and the Madison School District. MMSD staff who are aware of a student with acute dental needs should notify their school nurse for possible referral to "Give Kids a Smile." Questions about the program can be directed to Sally Zirbel-Donisch at MMSD Health Services, 663-8424. Return to MMSD Today |
