Reality surpasses expectations for new O'Keeffe Principal Enright

Kay Enright, O'Keeffe Principal

It is fun to reflect on the realities compared to the expectations after my first month as principal of O'Keeffe Middle School. I was more excited than the students for the school year to begin and they were very eager to reconnect with friends, staff members and our welcoming school facility. It was inspiring to see how comfortable and connected students felt with the entirety of our O'Keeffe experience.

The reality of my school days here has far surpassed expectations. The enthusiasm and energy of our students and staff is incredible. Our staff members are masterful at finding ways to reach all students and they use each other's expertise to encourage and engage every student.

Our staff believes that each student can achieve at high levels and that conviction translates into student confidence in their learning. Education equals opportunity and we all work at establishing the relationships, trust and connections with students and families to effectively teach.

Making this significant transition has given me lots of empathy for our sixth graders as well as our transfer students who are adjusting to a new school experience. Together, we are adjusting to this change with joy and determination. Navigating all new procedures, processes, and personalities is a life skill that serves us all well. We "new" people have learned that being welcomed and accepted helps us to make sure we extend that welcome and acceptance to every new student , family member and staff member we meet.

Our O'Keeffe families have been so welcoming and thoughtful. We have many parents volunteering as they are aware of our budget cuts. They do filing, catalog books, do inventory, help with field trips, repair instruments, lead extracurricular activities and work in classrooms. When we have dances or other activities, our parents and guardians are always available. It is an unbelievably giving community. Most importantly, our families are our partners in supporting our high expectations for each and every student.

"Learning curve" does not adequately describe what the experience is for a rookie principal. I would call it a "learning category 1 climb" in Tour de France terms. It is more like a "learning launch". Together we are adapting to Infinite Campus, new security measures, the wellness policy and creative resource allocation.

Every day I am thankful for the patience and understanding of the staff, parents and students. We laugh hard and often. The positive, caring nature of our entire staff makes every day special. I am thankful for the help of all the other principals, my mentor, Anne Nolan, and Pam Nash.

There is so much energy, talent and potential at O'Keeffe Middle School. Seeing the future leaders of our community and our world blossoming as articulate, curious and sensitive people makes me feel lucky beyond words. Simply stated, I am honored to serve as O'Keeffe's principal.
