News and information for staff members and the Madison community
Vol. II No. 3 - December 22, 2006
Sustainability is a term that has gained popularity in recent years. MMSD understands our social responsibility to educate the community's youth on the importance of reducing our impact on the environment.
The new Linden Park Elementary School is being designed as a green school, incorporating many technologies to reduce energy consumption, and providing a model for students to learn from.
The new school will include geothermal heating and cooling, day lighting concepts, energy efficient equipment, materials that improve air quality (commonly referred to as low VOC materials), and possibly a small wind turbine.
Recycled materials will also be incorporated. Furniture, play area ground cover, carpeting and sheet rock, all contain after market materials. The concrete used for the foundations will contain fly ash as a binder.
The efforts in sustainable design will earn the Linden Park school a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. This nationally recognized label is awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. To date, no other public elementary school in the state has a LEED certification.
To obtain the LEED certification, the building will treat some of the storm water run off through the use of infiltration areas, or rain gardens. A detailed building commissioning process is also required to insure all the systems are functioning as designed.
Another component of LEED is recycling of materials during construction. Multiple dumpsters will be on site during construction to separate wood waste, sheet rock, metals, etc., for recycling.
