Student artists create portraits for El Salvadorian children

by Monica Urbanik, Art teacher, East HS

On November 15, Channel 27 News featured several East High School art students for their participation in "The Memory Project". "The Memory Project" is an idea generated by Madison local Ben Schumaker.

After spending much time visiting orphanages in Central America, Schumaker came up with the idea to make a connection between the children growing up in these orphanages and high school students in the United States. My students in Painting III and Advanced Art created portraits of children from an orphanage in El Salvador called Nuestro Pequenos Hermanos.

These artworks were delivered to the children in El Salvador with photos of and letters by the East High School artists.

The East artists are: Lara Byrne - grade 12, Callie Caro-Leverich — gr. 12, Christy Cork — gr. 12, Kaila Hogan — gr. 12, Anna Holcomb — gr. 12, Emily Odt — gr. 12, Alexis Pophal — gr. 12, and Alexandra Jefferson — gr. 11.
