Sherman MS: Intergenerational Book Discussion - On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 14, 2006, a group of Sherman Middle School 8th grade students and adults from the community met in the Sherman LMC to discuss the book, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. This book discussion was a collaborative project involving Sherman students and staff, staff from the Lakeview Library, and members of the community through the Northside Planning Council and RSVP. Our students and the adults involved enjoyed the discussion.

Sandburg Elementary: On Tuesday, November 28, Sandburg Elementary celebrated the grand opening of the new Latino Family Resource Center "El centro familiar". The project was developed as part of a grant from the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools to create a resource center for Sandburg's latino families. Over the past year, Sandburg staff have worked collaboratively with Sandburg's latino families to select and purchase materials for the resource center. The center contains books, math materials, games, and other educational resources to be used by families in their homes.
At the grand opening (pictured), families learned about the new resource center and had their first opportunity to explore and check out materials from the center. The grand opening was a great success, as the families were thrilled to begin using all the wonderful resources to learn and play with their children in their homes!
El centro familiar will be open every day during school hours for families to visit and borrow materials. It is the hope of everyone involved with this project that El centro familiar will be another valuable connection between Sandburg and the community.

Sennett MS: This fall Sennett held its most successful book fair to date and, since the sale exceed last year's profits, the school's courageous principal Colleen Lodholz honored her promise to students by tap dancing during all three lunch periods!

MSCR Offers High School Volleyball: This fall, MSCR expanded the high school extramural program to include volleyball. There were a total of six different teams, including two coed teams. Games were played on Saturday mornings at each of the four main high schools. Each team was able to play on their home court as well as travel to the other high schools. Overall, there were 60 participants involved in the program. The teams were self-organized and coached by an MSCR paid coach. The participants practiced together once a week and by the end of the program everyone showed improvement. This was a great start to the volleyball program and everyone involved seemed to have a good time! Pictured is the West High Team called "Sugoi".

Hamilton MS: Maggie Owens and Susan Sundquist's 6th grade class at Hamilton was visited by members of project IceCube. Project Ice Cube involves building the world's largest neutrino telescope named AMANDA. The telescope is 1400 metres under the ice near the Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole. Every year over 100 people travel to the South Pole with the IceCube project each year. They are part of the Antarctic community that includes scientists, support staff, and tourists. For more information check out http://www.icecube.wisc.edu/

Hagar Landsman (pictured) gives a presentation to the class explaining just that and shows some gear to the Owen/Sundquist 6th grade class . This is necessary to endure the extreme cold and survive in the Antarctic.

Student Teacher Holly Butters puts on the some of the gear.
Marquette 5th grader organizes sale for King Memorial: Julia Joy Hilliard, a Marquette Elementary 5th grader, organized a bake sale at her school and contributed the $228.35 to Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial in Washington D.C. Julia Joy, or JJ, said organizing the event took a long time, but that the sale "was a bigger success than I ever thought." JJ also sought contributions from relatives via e-mail. Kudos to JJ and everyone who supported her efforts!
