The Falcon Times - Sherman MS

Maureen Conklin, Sherman Library Media Specialist

"The Falcon Times" is the school newspaper created by students for students at Sherman Middle School. The newspaper is produced by approximately 12-15 students from all three grades who participate in the MSCR-sponsored after school Newspaper Club.

Some students write articles on topics of interest and others provide their original artwork for each issue. Student reporters and photographers, armed with digital cameras, attend sports contests and other after-school events to record these events for upcoming issues.

In addition, staff of "The Falcon Times" provide answers to students' questions in the "Dear Daisy" advice column found in each issue.

"The Falcon Times," or a version of it, has been in existence at Sherman for six years; students produce 4-6 issues each year.

New for the 2006-07 school year is the Newspaper Club's collaboration with 6th grade computer classes. As the Newspaper Club participants submit articles and artwork to a shared file, the 6th grade computer students access the file to edit the articles and lay out each issue.

The original of each issue is submitted to the school district's printing department where enough copies to cover the Sherman student population are printed. When the copies are returned to Sherman, students distribute copies to each team of students.
