Leopold Cafeteria Opens: The first day back after winter break was exciting for Leopold students as they enjoyed their meal in the new cafeteria. The $2.76 million project was approved in the November 2006 referendum. The spacious, light-filled room opens out into the playground. The former cafeteria is being remodeled for additional classroom space. «|» Pictured is Principal Mary Hyde being interviewed by the media during the first day's opening.

Toki MS: Toki had a 'Read-In' day in December and a number of community "celebreties" were invited. Those who came to read to a number of classes included: Mayor Dave; Carol Carstensen, Arlene Silveira, and Johnny Winston Jr., Board of Education members; Katy Sai and Alanno Rizzo, WISC-TV 3; Carla Phillips, Urban League of Greater Madison; Susan Troller, Capital Times; and Doug Moe, Capital Times & Toki parent.

Cherokee art: Eighth grade art students will showcase their work at the Overture Center for the Arts in the 2nd floor gallery from March 24th to June 14th, 2007. Students researched an event that affected their sense of justice and then created a linoleum block print to communicate an event worth remembering.

They learned the vocabulary and techniques of block carving and printed blocks with visiting artists Joseph Velasquez and Greg Nanney of Drive By Press. Velasquez and Nanney lectured, demonstrated, and printed with their mobile printmaking studio.

The prints (pictured below) are the culmination of this experience. The students were under the direction of Cultural Arts Teacher, Amy Mietzel. This project was funded in part by the Cherokee PTO and a grant from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.

The gallery reception and opening is scheduled for Sunday April 15th at the gallery from 2pm till 3:30 pm. Students, families, teachers, and anyone else interested are invited to come.
