Internet safety and web site evaluation

by Mark Lea, Teaching and Learning

The Internet can be a great resource, but it can also be a confusing and dangerous place. The Madison School District has taken a number of steps to reduce the danger to you and your students and to increase your ability to productively use the Internet.

In compliance with the Child Internet Protection Act of 2000 (CIPA) the district filters Internet content. Internet content is filtered while using the District's wide-area network (WAN), but frequently not when you use the Internet from other locations.

There are a number of useful resources available for Internet users interested in maximizing the safety of their online experience.

You can also improve the effectiveness of your Internet searches by applying a rubric to the materials you find on the World Wide Web. You can find tools to help evaluate web sites by going to the MMSD Internet Detectives web site.

Finally, another strategy to improve your searching efficiency involves the use of pre-selected web sites. By relying on the expertise of other professionals, the use of pre-selected sites can save Internet users valuable time and improve the level of safety for all. The district maintains a list of excellent sites identified by MMSD staff matched to district standards and needs at the MMSD Electronic Library.

In addition to the Electronic Library, the district also subscribes to netTrekker d.i., a database of pre-selected web sites. netTrekker d.i. is available to all students and staff from within the district, or remotely using a login and password (available from your local library media specialist, or mlea@madison.k12.wi.us).
