Also working for MSCR

The good ol' summertime - what are your plans?

Sharon Neylon, MSCR

For some district staff June 15th may mark the beginning of summer and time off — for others it marks the beginning of a new job! Many MMSD staff spend part of their summer working for MSCR and the many recreation programs that gear up for the busy season.

"We love hiring MMSD staff to fill our recreation positions," comments Lucy Chaffin, MSCR Director. "We know we will get staff who are familiar with working with students and the public, and who have wonderful skills. Since MSCR is a part of the district, it makes the hiring process much easier."

For MMSD staff, working for MSCR makes great sense as there are many benefits in addition to the obvious income during the summer. Hours can be full or part time depending on the needs of the person and the program. Most programs end early enough to still allow time off before the school year starts. Also, hours may be used towards retirement hour accruals.

MMSD staffer Cyndy Michels, Clerk Typist Senior at Blackhawk MS, noted another reason why working for MSCR is rewarding, "What I like best is that I get to know students in a different setting other than school...the program shows students how important volunteering is to the community and how rewarding it can be!"

Staff who work with camps and playgrounds also note that they enjoy being outside during the summer. One staff sums it up by saying, "I chose to work in the MSCR summer program because I truly enjoy kids, fresh air, exercise, umpires, coaches, the supportive parents and fans." That says it all!

MSCR also hires MMSD staff to work during the school year. Jenny Cox, Administrative Assistant at Allis Elementary, works during the winter season, supervising Adult Basketball Leagues in the evenings and High School Metro Basketball Leagues on Saturdays. She also coaches 4th-5th grade girls and 4th-5th grade boys basketball for Allis-MSCR Afterschool Clubs. Jenny says, "I feel a strong connection to MSCR. I continue to be amazed at how devoted the MSCR staff is."

MSCR is hiring for the summer 2007 season. There are over 30 openings from camp directors to tennis and swim instructors.

MMSD staff or family members interested should take a look at the complete employment listings on www.mscr.org. To apply for a position just print an application form from the website and return to MSCR by the first deadline of March 1st or second deadline (for remaining positions) of April 5th.
