Who's Who — School Mascots

Again this month, here's something a little different for Who's Who. Can you recognize school mascots?

Here are six pictures of elementary and middle school mascots along with a description about what each mascot means to its school. Can you match the mascots to the school?

The six mascots this month are from Allis, Kennedy, Midvale and Thoreau Elementary Schools and Jefferson and Toki Middle Schools. Answers are given below.

Have you enjoyed this break from Who's Who with staff members' photographs? Or are you yearning to guess persons again? Fill out the form after the answers and let us know. And thanks for your feedback.

Tico the Thunderbird
Tico the Thunderbird has been our school's mascot for many years. Our Ho Chunk Family Tree Oak Sculpture carved by Harry Whitehorse has the Thunderbird on top of it as it is an important clan and symbol for the Ho-Chunk peoples as well as being important to us. A Ho-Chunk village was once part of the school grounds so the Thunderbird is a long part of the area's history. We are proud to have the Thunderbird represent us as a school.
Wildcats
In about 2000 the PTA wished to change the school colors and mascot. They had the students vote on new colors and a new mascot. The students chose green and white, and the wildcat. Previous to that, the school colors for 80 years had been blue and gold, and the mascot was a 'buck'.
Jaguars
Since the school was built we have been the Jaguars. A jaguar picture is on the cover of our yearbook annually. We are writing a new school song and incorporating the jaguar in its theme.
Mustangs
The Mustang originated one year after the opening of the school in 1951 when the school's football team played for the All City Elementary Championship at Breeze Stevens Field. Needing a mascot in a hurry, school parent Lee Hastings, then owner of Hastings Stables and Equestrian Park, donated fabric horse figures that were sewn onto the students' jerseys. And thus, the our mascot was born.
Dragon
Our mascot appears on our school newsletter and student/family handbook, and is prominently displayed on two walls in the gym. We have a line of staff clothing with our mascot on it. We have two renditions of our mascot, and the newer version was designed by a former staff member here, Memorial Asst. Principal Matt Hendrickson.
Cougars
Cougar's two main jobs are 1) Open our monthly assemblies with Cougar Code of Conduct songs and 2) visit all the classrooms every Friday . The students really look forward to his visits.
