News and information for staff members and the Madison community
Vol. II No. 5 - February 27, 2007
The weekend of February 24 brought heavy snows to the Madison area. While most of us stayed home and avoided the hazardous weather and driving conditions, Building Services staff was out plowing and shoveling in order to prepare school parking lots and sidewalks for students and staff on Monday.
Staff worked eight hours on Saturday, fourteen hours on Sunday, and came back at 2:00 A.M. on Monday morning.
The snowfall on Sunday was wet and heavy, with drifting, making it particularly challenging to plow. Staff could not get to plowing playgrounds until Tuesday, and came in at 2:00AM on Wednesday to finish up.
Many locations had three to five feet of snow on the sidewalks near the street. Staff were unable to plow this with our pick up trucks and snow blowers. On Monday, they used our skid steer, and rented another to clear these areas of excessive snow.
This dedicated staff includes Bob Schmid, Gary Muckler, Gary Larson, Glen Ball, Fred Haack, Steve Spaeni, Mark Brown, Pat Smith, Al Maier, Willie Truschinski, Berlin Sorenson, Don Coyier, and Terry Tiffany.
At the high schools the following staff came in to help remove snow: Doug Parks, Todd Baker, Al Klinger, Dave Linden, Art Lopez, Jeff Davis, Paul Donohue, Barry Thurman, Bob Duley, Ed Kersten, Steve Kipp, Rob Larson, Mike Ruhde, and Lou Oleson.
Special thanks go out to Dan Kliest, who spent all weekend on the phone scheduling staff to handle the snow removal.
Playgrounds also had to be plowed by Building Services staff after the snowstorm of February 24 & 25.
