Three teachers honored in three different ways

Rita Kehl, Don Vincent and Jeanette Burda are recognized

by

Three MMSD teachers have been recognized recently for their outstanding work by three different organizations.

Rita Kehl is one of the YWCA's Women of Distinction, Don Vincent received the most prestigious award from the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers, and Jeanette Burda has been selected to represent the state in this summer's Presidential Academy for American History and Civics.

Kehl, a preschool language and literacy resource teacher in the Department of Teaching and Learning, is one of six women honored by the YWCA of Madison for their outstanding community service and leadership in programs and activities benefiting the Madison community.

Kehl promotes literacy by coordinating Launching into Literacy which educates child care providers about techniques to help pre-schoolers learn to read and write.

Vincent, a science teacher at West HS, received the Ron Gibbs Award which is given "to honor a person who has made outstanding contributions in science education over a long and distinguished career in Wisconsin."

Vincent is the fifth MMSD teacher to receive this award in its 30-year existence. Former MMSD teacher and current coordinator of science research interns Rachel Egan received the award last year.

Burda, a social studies teacher at Memorial HS, is one of 52 teachers selected to participate in the Presidential Academy which takes place in July and August in Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington D.C.

This academy leads secondary school teachers in on-site study of three turning points in American history — The American Revolution, The Civil War and The Civil Rights Movement. More information about the Academy is available by clicking here.
