Ride or walk to help keep kids safe

by Jeannette Deloya, MMSD Program Support for School Social Work

Preventing child abuse is something that MMSD schools and staff take seriously. Starting at a very young age, children in Madison's schools are taught skills of safety, self-awareness, networking and persistence. These skills serve our children well throughout their adolescence, and well into adulthood.

This is the second year that MMSD has had an active involvement in the SARIS SpokeOut Ride and Walk to Keep Kids Safe. This year, the 15th annual SpokeOut will take place on Saturday, May 12, from 9:00 am - 12 noon, starting and ending at Olin Park in Madison.

Madison schools are encouraging our community to take part. The event features a bike ride around Lake Monona, a two-mile walk, or a 30-mile ride with members of the Bombay Bicycle Club. There will be food and entertainment for the whole family.

The purpose of this family-friendly event is to raise awareness for child abuse prevention and to support child abuse prevention efforts in our state. All proceeds benefit Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin.

This year, SpokeOut has included a special incentive for schools in Dane County. When participants register to walk or run in the event, they can designate a school. The school with the highest percentage of participation by youth and families can select $500 in goods from School Specialties, a school supplies catalogue that offers thousands of recreational and educational items.

For more information and a brochure, please call Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin at 256-3374 or go to www.preventchildabusewi.org. Or you can register to participate online as an individual or as a team by using the following Web site: www.firstgiving.com/pcaw.

Hope to see you on May 12!
