The Fruit Bowl: a symbol of kindness, relationships and sharing

Helena White, Speech-Language, East High School

Perched on top of a gray metal filing cabinet is an item that causes intense interest and excitement among the students of East High School. Teenagers stop by daily to check on it. They happily adopt a polite, courteous and respectful manner in order to obtain access to it. News about its status spreads rapidly through the east end of the first floor hall.

What is this item that has such an effect on students? It is simply a bowl of fruit.

Since early in the 2004-05 school year, the East High School Speech-Language office in room 110A has provided fruit for students. The fruit bowl originally was started by Sarah Stuntebeck, Speech-Language Pathologist, for the purpose of meeting new students, encouraging conversation, building community, and simply having a healthful snack available to everyone.

The fruit bowl is available to any East High School student who simply says hello and asks for a piece of fruit. An additional benefit is that it has resulted in very friendly relationships between the three Speech-Language Pathologists in the room, Sarah Stuntebeck, Jenny Vyas and Helena White, and East students with whom the clinicians would otherwise not have any contact.

The students adore the fresh fruit and quickly empty the bowl. While oranges are the most favorite item, apples and bananas disappear just as quickly. Many students have come to rely on their daily piece of fruit and express heartbreaking disappointment if the fruit bowl is empty.

When the bowl has been newly replenished, the news travels quickly through the halls, and a rash of students come in, politely requesting fruit and expressing sincere gratitude.

The expense of replenishing the fruit bowl rapidly became apparent. Fortunately, with a few phone calls and via word-of-mouth, a number of businesses and persons have stepped forward with donations. They include:

  • Brennan's Fruit and Vegetable Market on Northport Drive
  • Willy Street Coop
  • Pierce's Northside Market in Sherman Plaza

One pathologist's relative was so impressed with the Fruit Bowl that she immediately donated a check for $50.

In order to continue the Fruit Bowl project, which is simply a symbol of kindness, relationships and sharing, we are seeking donations from parents, staff, or community members. Any contribution will help ensure continuing availability of a healthy snack in a friendly environment for all East High students.

For further information on the Speech-Language Office Fruit Bowl, or to arrange donations, please contact Sarah Stuntebeck, Jenny Vyas or Helena White: East High School, Room 110A, Phone: 204-1834
