Cultural connection tip: "Hello" in many languages
|
Excerpt from English Connection Newsletter, Volume 3 Issue 1: One fun activity to do with your class is to learn how to say hello in a variety of languages. Ask everyone how they say hello in their native language. Put each hello word on a poster around the room. Set a time each day to say hello to each other in rotation, modeling the behavior to get things started. One student (Peg) begins. "Hello, Fernando." Fernando answers, "Hello, Peg." Then Fernando turns to Pa. "Hola, Pa." Pa answers, "Hola, Fernando". Then Pa turns to Jim, "Nyob zoo, Jim," and so on. You may want to teach the class how to say hello in sign language too. One thing to keep in mind as you do this activity is that different cultures use different kind of body language when speaking. Therefore, don't reprimand your students for lack of eye contact or facial expression. Return to MMSD Today |
