Zina Knox, West High School

Joe Thomas Community Service Award for Students Award RecipientsSometimes the joy of giving is evident on a young person's face. Zina Knox delights in giving her heart and soul in service to others Zina has been a motivator and friend to children through her work at Randall school, the Boys and Girls Club and as an organizer of events like Toys for Tots. As President of the West High Black Student Union, Zina, quietly, but forcefully rallied members to raise nearly $10,000 for the annual holiday toy drive. At the Boys and Girls club she developed imaginative learning activities and established a homework support room. In addition to her enthusiasm for cheerleading at West, she serves as an assistant coach to the Southside Raiders Cheerleaders. At Mt. Zion Church she reignited the Young Adult Choir and Dance Ministry. She is a steward for scholarship, enrolling in challenging college preparatory classes. She has actively participated in student government and served on the Madison Board of Education's Equity Task Force. As a member of the University of Wisconsin's PEOPLE program, Zina has sought out opportunities for advancement and learning, wherever and whenever possible.
