Nancy "Jill" Murray, Van Hise Elementary

DSA Award Recipient — Educational Assistant

For many students she's that one special adult. At Van Hise Elementary, special education assistant Jill Murray takes on a multitude of roles with equal proficiency and dexterity.

She's a pro at working with classroom teachers to modify assignments for students with IEP's.

She's a community builder - organizing meals for a colleague on sick leave, a cheerleader - making Packer pins for every Van Hise employee and an entrepeneur - initiating a lucrative school fundraising program.

When action is called for, Jill is on the move. If a student shows signs of reading progress, Jill shares her list of favorite book titles. After 9/11, when students felt helpless, Jill organized a pin and magnet sale that earned several thousand dollars for the Red Cross, scoring victory for her students, and the larger community.

Parents are grateful for the way she provides consistent and respectful guidance to their children. As one student describes it, "Ms. Murray explains things so they make sense."

She's a ready source of support to any student who may need a warm coat, a gentle nudge toward positive after-school activities, an emotional sounding board or a friend.

Her winning approach is undeniable. For the entire Van Hise community, Jill Murray is a most valuable team member.
