Mary Gulbrandsen, Chief of Staff

DSA Award Recipient — Administrators

Look at any district successful initiative in the past ten years and you will find the fine hand of Mary Gulbrandsen, Chief of Staff, since 1999.

Mary G., as she is affectionately known, has been instrumental in securing a multimillion-dollar safe schools healthy children grant, spearheading cutting-edge early childhood programs, ferreting out untapped resources, confronting issues of race and equity, nurturing partnerships and navigating long-range planning issues.

Her tenure in the Madison Schools began in 1988 as a School Nurse. Her wholesale commitment to tackling the toughest of District challenges, landed her increasing responsibilities leading to the number two position in the District alongside Superintendent Art Rainwater.

Though quick to give credit to others, Mary G. has always had a firm grasp on the steering wheel, guiding our district over many bumps in the road to keep us on course.

To those who know her well, it's no surprise that Madison Magazine named her among "22 people you should know" in 2004. But hold on, after retirement she'll continue to do great things for Madison.
