Jane Koval, Van Hise Elementary

DSA Award Recipient — Elementary Teachers

Student-centered, integrated, differentiated and engaging; the best of best practices are all part of Jane Koval's physical education program at Van Hise Elementary school.

Lessons learned from Ms. Koval in the gym are carried throughout the hallways and classrooms, on the playground and at home. Her positive influence is felt everywhere at Van Hise.

Her innovative and ever-changing curriculum responds to students' interests and reflects world events.

She works closely with other teachers to connect physical education to classroom units of study.

Jane Koval seizes all opportunities for growth and improvement, serving on her school's leadership team, filling in during the Principal's absence and collaborating with other PE teachers across the District.

Colleagues appreciate her ability to bring people together for constructive change, and sometimes just for fun.

School-wide trips, field day events, staff socials and student performances demonstrate her enthusiasm for the Van Hise community.

In the physical education profession Jane is cutting-edge. And at the heart of her practice is an understanding that "wellness" often begins, not with a federal mandate or policy, but with a smile. She generates wellness in every way. Van Hise students are well on their way toward healthy futures thanks to Jane Koval.
