Name School Grant Title Amount Awarded
Katie Cierniak Franklin Promoting Understanding of Hmong Culture $6,410
In order to promote understanding of Hmong students and their families within the school district, a professional development resource will be developed. Interviews will be video-taped with a variety of Hmong individuals including students at all educational levels from elementary through college, adults, community representatives, and school staff members. The project will explore life before and after arriving in the US, adapting to life in the US, day-to-day home and school experiences, challenges and issues. The project will seek to determine how to best facilitate home-to-school connections with families. A study guide will accompany the video that will also be available on the district website as an on-line course.
Debora Gil R. Casado Memorial Response Systems: Increasing Participation in the Classroom $10,000
This grant seeks to increase student engagement, increase student accountability for learning, and integrate technology into the curriculum through the use of Classroom Response Systems. Classroom Response Systems are remote control devices that allow students to respond to questions, providing teachers and students with immediate feedback. Students are able to respond to classroom material anonymously, creating an increased comfort level. The grant author indicates that classroom response systems can begin to break down walls in classroom participation, dramatically increase teacher assessment of learning, and change the classroom format from one of imparting knowledge to actively working with knowledge.
Susan Hamblin Teaching and Learning History of Madison — the First 150 Years $9,902
While the MMSD Social Studies focus for grade three is Madison and Communities Around the World, no material about Madison is written at a third grade reading level. Grade three teachers were surveyed and strongly supported the need for age-appropriate, social studies standards-based curricular materials relating to instruction on Madison as a community. This project will create a booklet on the history of Madison and a web-based teachers' curriculum guide. Copies of the booklet will be distributed to elementary schools. The project is a collaboration among the social studies instructional resource teacher, language arts/reading resource teacher, Madison historian, Wisconsin Historical Society Consultant, and third grade teachers and students.
Ron Lott Ass't Supt. Creating Above the Line Classrooms and Schools $2,500
This project will fund a week-long staff and parent training program designed to provide a consistent and continuous model of supporting positive student behavior. As a result of this training student behavior will improve leading to greater success in school. Both student behavioral referrals to staff and suspensions will decrease. The training is based on Corwin Kronenberg's "Above the Line" professional development program which offers new approaches and strategies for school staff and parents in understanding and addressing antecedent behaviors, thus heading off the more serious infractions that lead to suspensions.
Len Mormino West Personal Education Plan $2,000
The Personal Education Plan is an internet-based tool designed by West students, staff, parents and community members to help students succeed in school and customize their educational experience to meet broader life interests and future goals. The program will increase student engagement by creating a connection between school coursework, extra-curricular activities, volunteer and internship opportunities, careers and post high school education opportunities, and students' personal interests and goals. All work that students complete on the system remains with them until graduation and is accessible through any computer with Internet capability.
Julie A. Palkowski Teaching and Learning World Cultural Explorations through the Arts $9,810
Through the use of authentic artifacts, art pieces, musical instruments, and performances, students will be able to learn about world cultures. Well-researched materials will showcase various regions of the world and travel throughout MMSD schools. In addition, the project will foster partnerships with community arts groups enabling students to experience world cultural arts performances. Students will benefit from greater access to arts resources as they meet the visual arts and music standards and benchmarks for world culture and history.
Steve Somerson East Document Projectors: Shining the Light to Meet the Needs of Diverse Learners in Student Centered Classrooms $9,900
The document projector allows students to display their work in class without any delay. Students receive immediate feedback and teachers may more easily establish work expectations. A document projector is a camera that projects work from a student's paper to a screen, allowing work to be shared with the entire class instantaneously. The project supports the East Math Department's move to student centered classrooms, enabling student to receive timely feedback and discussion of their work. Teaching will be enhanced as teachers may project everything from book pages, articles, and pictures to student homework and class work.
