Three of the 11 Presidential Scholar semifinalists in Wisconsin are from Madison Schools. They are:
"It is quite an honor to be named a semifinalist in the Presidential Scholars program," said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. "These students are among the highest academic and artistic achieving students in our state and nation."
They are eligible to become Presidential Scholars which will be named later, one male and one female from each state.
Three of the top four teams at the recent Wisconsin Science Olympiad State Tournament were MMSD schools. West took first place, La Follette 2nd place and Memorial earned 4th place among the 52 teams.
Congratulations to the many students and teachers who worked hard for these top placements. The coaches are Tim Thompson at West, Charles Chapin at La Follette and Cindy Kellor at Memorial.
First place teams and individuals advance to the National Science Olympiad Tournament later this month in Wichita. Personal contributions are welcome to pay for the trip in order for the students to compete against the state champions of other states.
Memorial student Timothy Black won the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Timothy was selected based on his exceptional performance on his AP exams in math and science.
Timothy is shown in the photo at right receiving the award from Dave Mitchell of Siemens. He will receive a $2000 college scholarship.
Only one female and one male are selected from each state. The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement are awarded each year to students with the greatest number of scores of 5 on AP exams taken in grades 9, 10 and 11.
