Casandra Taylor honored for use of technology in school and life

by

La Follette HS student Casandra Taylor was the only student to receive the Yes I Can Award for Technology from the National Council for Exceptional Children last month. This award identifies children and youth with disabilities who have made significant achievements.

The NCEC recognized 29 students this year in nine categories, but Casandra was the only student honored in Technology. Casandra was recognized both for her extensive use of technology and for advocating the exploration of technology use for another student at La Follette.

Casandra, the daughter of Terry Ann Taylor, an MMSD Occupational Therapist, learned how to use technology at La Follette. "If it hadn't been for the special education staff at La Follette High School, and in particular Celeste Richards-Gannon, OTR, Casandra would not be anywhere near as proficient as she is (with the technology she uses)."

This NCEC Website text explains Casandra's achievements:

"Casandra Taylor, 17, who has multiple disabilities, uses technology to succeed in school and life. Casandra uses an augmentative communication device to communicate with others and participate in class discussions. As a Wisconsin Easter Seal Ambassador, she wrote and gave speeches to multiple groups through technology.

"With her device, Casandra also presented at a Closing the Gap Technology Conference. Additionally, she helped a student with autism learn to communicate by loaning her one of her communication systems."
