The team from Miron Construction Co., Inc. — the general contractor on the project — has poured the footings and foundations and has begun work on the masonry components. They have also started on the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins, and the site work is in progress.

In the upcoming two months, Miron's team and associated subcontractors will begin precast plank installation, pouring slab on grade, will continue with the masonry, and will begin the door frame installation. The construction team will also begin installation of the mechanical systems (i.e. heating and cooling), as well as the geothermal heating system which runs underground. This aspect of the project is a feature that will contribute to the school attaining LEEDŽ Silver Certification.

LEEDŽ Certification encompasses more than strictly taking into account environmental concerns. It encompasses design and construction strategies that are environmentally-friendly and economically viable.

It also includes paying close attention to the way buildings are laid out, the utilization of recycled materials, natural lighting, maintaining indoor air quality, while participating in erosion, sedimentation, and site control throughout the course of construction — keeping the goal of reducing overall environmental impact in mind.

When LEEDŽ features are implemented buildings have lower operating costs and energy requirements, and provide increased comfort and value.

With the Miron mission of building for our future, today, comes a certain responsibility to construct facilities that reflect a genuine interest in environmental sustainability.

This new elementary school will be the first school in the MMSD and one of the very few in the state to be LEEDŽ certified.
