You might say that MMSD's summer school provides something for everyone. Summer school, which entails Extended Learning Summer School, Enrichment and High School classes, ended on August 3, 2007. This completes another very successful summer school season, serving over 3,700 students.
Extended Learning Summer School gives students more time to develop skills and meet standards. Enrichment provides students with high-interest learning opportunities. Students taking high school classes earn graduation credits. The consistent theme is that learning for individual students does not happen at the same rate. Summer school provides the much needed extra time for learning.
This year the "kindergarten ready" program was expanded to over 300 students. These first time school students get a much needed jump on school readiness and literacy skills. Extended Learning Summer School also expanded to serve all 3rd through 5th grade students who need to meet literacy and math criteria.
Enrichment was expanded to offer two new courses, Board Games of All Names and Sports of All Sorts. At Thoreau, teachers Gwen Kong and April Sopkin took this opportunity to team together to provide a variety of activities from Capture the Ball to Kickball to Tie Dye T-shirts to Action Art.
Madison School Community Recreation is an important summer learning partner, providing afternoon recreation activities for students who enroll in the morning academic classes. Families have the opportunity to place their child for a full day of programming.
Learning, Engagement, Relationships — summer school provides a powerful learning experience for a very important population of students.
