MMSD's Wellness Policy has now been in place for one year. Last year,
questions arose repeatedly about the policy section on food. Here are the
most frequently asked questions and answers.
- Can candy be sold for fundraising? Answer: Candy is
permitted as a fundraiser during the 2007-08 school year. However, sale to
students during the school day on school grounds is NOT permitted. After
September 1, 2008, candy will not be offered for sale as part of any school
related activity at elementary and middle schools.
- Can candy be brought to school to celebrate birthdays and
holidays such as Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day? Answer:
NO. Parents may bring other items to celebrate —
items that fit within the MMSD Wellness Policy or from the designated snack
list. Teachers are encouraged to limit the number of celebrations where
treats are served (e.g., monthly for birthdays).
- Can parents/students bring cupcakes, cookies and other baked
goods to celebrate birthdays and other holidays at school?
Answer: Yes, but teachers are encouraged to limit these celebrations
(e.g., monthly). All home baked goods should be prepared and labeled
according to "MMSD Guidelines for Safe Food Handling, Parties and
Celebrations at School" which can be found by

here.
