Community Learning Centers report highlights academic success

Nicole Graper, MSCR Marketing Specialist

MSCR administers Community Learning Centers (CLCs) at several MMSD schools. Five of the CLC sites are funded by Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI) grants. In June of 2007, Lake View, Lincoln and Lowell Elementary and Wright Middle School completed the fifth year of a five year grant program while Midvale completed its fourth year.

These programs provide additional academic support during after school hours for children who are performing below grade level. They also provide enrichment opportunities to economically disadvantaged children. The following are highlights from recent grant reports for elementary sites:

  • Three schools served between 66% and 84% of the school population. Midvale CLC programs served 87% of the school population
  • Percent of "regulars," attending 30 or more times during the school year: Lake View 43%, Lincoln 35%, Lowell 26% and Midvale 36%.
  • 42%-71% of CLC participants were eligible for free/reduced lunch.
  • Percent of regular attendees who increased math grades from 2nd to 4th quarter: Lake View 45%, Lincoln 45%, Lowell 29%, Midvale 37%.
  • Percent of regular attendees who increased reading grades from 2nd to 4th quarter: Lake View 47%, Lincoln 42%, Lowell 47%, Midvale 58%.
  • Percent of attendees who were "regulars" in reading tutoring who increased academic performance in reading (as per teacher report): Lake View 87%, Lincoln, 80%, Lowell 83%, Midvale 44%.
  • Percent of regular attendees in math tutoring who increased academic performance in math (as per teacher report): Lake View 69%, Lincoln 78%, Lowell 54%, Midvale 38%.
  • Percent of regular attendees who increased their academic performance: Lake View 83%, Lincoln 77%, Lowell 90%, Midvale 97%.
  • Percent of regular attendees who improved their homework to their teacher's satisfaction: Lake View 70%, Lincoln 72%, Lowell 76%, Midvale 65%.
  • Percent of regular attendees who improved in getting along well with others: Lake View 74%, Lincoln 61%, Lowell 64%, Midvale 60%.
  • Percentages of regular attendees who improved school attendance: Lake View 78%, Lincoln 14% (majority of Lincoln's participants already had 98-100% attendance), Lowell 74% and Midvale 74%.
  • 97% of parents reported their satisfaction or high satisfaction with the Community Learning Center program, averaged across all four sites.

These are a few highlights from the grant reports for the Wright Community Learning Center:

  • Served 45 students in Saturday School
  • Helped 35 students transition to eighth grade
  • Served over 100 students in Minority Youth Career Assessment Project (MY CAP)
