What is it like being a Principal?

Carlettra Stanford, Gompers Elementary School

"Ms. Stanford, come look what I did!"

"Have you been in your office yet — you seem to have developed a small leak."

"Ms. Stanford, I think the red shirt you wore last week looked better."

One of the most exciting aspects of being a principal is never knowing what lies ahead! From the flooding of an office, students rushing to share proud moments, to comments from kindergarteners regarding your personal "fashion sense", there is never a dull day in the life of a principal!

I have learned a great deal about myself both professionally and personally thus far in my new role as principal of Gompers.

It continues to be abundantly clear that the duties and responsibilities of a school principal are expansive. I am a coach, mentor, instructional leader and student advocate. I continually work to create an environment which encourages professional learning communities to thrive. The many detours and paths this work takes me through are humbling and demanding, but the students continue to provide the smiles and anecdotes to make it worthwhile.

I continue to approach this new step of my career with enthusiasm and determination. I want to work with students, staff and the community to not only be a person who speaks about making positive educational changes, but one who works to ensure that they happen.

I recognize the strengths of my staff and students, and honor them by celebrating the victories, take risks and continuously search for innovative opportunities to change, grow and improve.

When you enter the main office of our building, the bulletin board invites you to "Soar with the Eagles at Gompers", and that is exactly what I am striving to do!
