Digital Workshop at Sandburg
Computers are interactive learning tools at Sandburg Elementary. 2/3 classroom teacher Jeff Mass and REACH teacher Jen Vena have embarked on an integrated digital workshop project in which students must be critical thinkers, decision-makers, cooperative community members, and effective communicators. They should not only be able to articulate their thinking but they should also feel comfortable sharing their thoughts within the classroom community. Students have now begun to take digital pictures of the community. They intend to share these pictures along with captions students write for them with digital pen pals in classrooms in Mexico and England. After the pictures are uploaded, students will discuss what the pictures say about us, our environment, and our community. One of our goals is for students to learn about how meaning is constructed in a culture by being reflective and analyzing their own lenses on the world around them. Digital workshop is designed to expand students' perspectives in thinking about how society, culture, environment, and identity shape our communities. West High Receives Grant from ExxonMobile
West High School has received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program. Rick Genin of Genin's Mobil-Hilldale (pictured left with West Applied Tech Teacher Jim Buchanan) worked with school officials to secure the grant which is one of 4,000 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations. To date Genin's Mobile-Hilldale has given $12,771 to West High. The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. Genin's Mobil met stringent eligibility criteria before applying for and being awarded this grant including having a commitment to provide a superior buying experience for customers. Memorial's got milk? Award presented by former Milwaukee Buck
Jon McGlocklin
Laura Patterson, a 2005 graduate of Memorial High School, nominated Memorial High School in the got milk? Healthy Schools Challenge because of the "Lifestyle Changes and Choices" class at the school. This class is offered as an alternative to physical education classes for students who have trouble with traditional physical activity due to size or disability. To reward Laura Patterson and Memorial, Jon McGlocklin, a member of the first Milwaukee Bucks team, visited Memorial to present the school with a $1,000 grant to fund their healthy initiative. The got milk? Healthy Schools Challenge program was created through the partnership between the national Milk Mustache "got milk?" campaign and the NBA to keep students and schools focused on making better lifestyle choices, like drinking milk and exercising. Memorial is also now a finalist to win the grand prize, which includes a $15,000 gym makeover for the school. MSCR Annual Awards and Recognition Celebration
