Art teacher Hunt receives Souper Bowl accolades

Phil Lyons, West HS Art teacher

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz proclaimed February 2nd, 2008 "Don Hunt Day" in Madison at this year's Habitat for Humanity Souper Bowl fundraiser. Don, who retired six years ago after teaching art at Madison West for 34 years, was also honored as "Communitarian of the Year" by the Habitat for Humanity. The fundraiser features student and professional potted bowls selling for $15 and filled with soup donated by community businesses

Don was recognized for his ongoing support of the event he started with Ron Konkol in 1996. During that time the Souper Bowl has raised over $225,000 which helps the HFH UW Chapter build homes for families in need of affordable housing. Award presenters also spoke of Don's extensive contributions to MMSD and Madison including being the catalyst for the creation of art galleries at MMSD's four major high schools, and his development of the Path of Voices anti-violence sculpture/audio project.

Don is currently living with and battling brain cancer while continuing his busy schedule as a prolific artist and director of Bethel Horizons Adamah Clay Studios in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.
