Partnership between Glendale ES and DATCP Flourishes

by Mickey Buhl, Glendale Principal

Thanks to the help of Liz Doss-Anderson, a Glendale parent, and the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools Adopt-a-School program, a wonderful partnership is blossoming between Glendale Elementary School and the WI Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP for short). DATCP is a 400+ employee agency that is right in our school's neighborhood.

In 2006, Liz and some representatives from Glendale met with DATCP to explore the possibility of creating an on-going partnership. DATCP was interested in community connections and our school offered great possibilities. We quickly had the support of everyone involved including an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from the agency's administrators and Board of Directors (who all visited Glendale for a school lunch on Valentines Day last year!)

We have a mutually beneficial partnership. DATCP staff volunteer on their own time at Glendale in numerous capacities, such as breakfast & lunch buddies, mentors and tutors. DATCP has collected a large amount of school supplies to help our students start the year well, hosted a large number of students on "Take Your Child to Work Day," and brought Alice in Dairyland to Glendale to serve ice cream during our spring Field Day and more.

Another extraordinary day at Glendale was when students and staff K-5 each received two free books thanks to this partnership. The dedicated staff at DATCP collected over 900 books. An entire day of giving and thanks which culminated with hundreds of smiling faces!

In return, we seek to bring our students to DATCP. For example, music teacher Marty Stein brought a joyful 4th and 5th grade music performance to DATCP last spring. Glendale's Student Council served breakfast to DATCP staff as a thank you for their school supply drive.

Our partnership with DATCP is one of the many wonderful things happening at Glendale.
