Helping Families, Helping Students Creating Partnerships Between Schools, Families & the Community
|
Over 25 exhibitors were present for a parent training and resource fair for students with disabilities, held at the Sheraton Hotel on the evening of January 16, 2008. Parents had the opportunity to learn about recreational activities, services in the MMSD, Dane county resources, community supports, two- and four-year colleges, and self-employment. In addition, there were a number of informational sessions for parents to attend. In the key note address, two individuals with disabilities and their families shared their stories about transitioning to adult life and the role of the school system in this transition. Following the key note address, there were several break-out sessions, including family experiences with transitioning to adult life; a panel discussion for students moving to a new school; resources and practical tips for students transitioning after high school; and support for students with mental health needs. Parents had the opportunity to network with other families and enjoy food and refreshments. One parent noted, "I really appreciate hearing from both parents and staff about transition services." This event was sponsored by the Madison Metropolitan School District and Disability Rights Wisconsin. Return to MMSD Today |
