"MMSD Today" welcomes the following from MMSD staff members:

  • Photographs and text of news in your school or department
  • News briefs — school or department news or announcements that are of district-wide interest
  • Feature article — for location on the "front page" of "MMSD Today"

More information on each is below.

"MMSD Today" is published mid-month, from September to May. The deadline for submissions is the 5th day of each month.

Photographs and text of news in your school or department

These news items are needed, and will be similar to the core of the former MMSD newsletter "Staff News."

Take numerous photographs of the activity or event, write a short description, and submit the text plus 2 or 3 photographs — either electronic or print. Send them to fhackbart@madison.k12.wi.us (preferred) or mail them to Faye Hackbart, Public Information, Doyle Building.

If you're not sure if your activity or event merits submission, contact Faye at 663-1898.

Please note that before we can use a photograph having a recognizable student or other minor (17 years or younger), permission of the parent is required. The form that you can adapt in order to get parental permission is on the district wide web and called Parental Permission for Student to be in News Report.

News briefs

News briefs are school or department news or announcements that are of district-wide interest.

Often these are awards or recognitions that come from outside organizations. They can be for individual staff members, school departments, schools or MMSD departments.

Write the news brief in a maximum of 100 words. Send it to Ken Syke at ksyke@madison.k12.wi.us.

Feature article

A feature article will likely be placed on the "front page," so it must be significant news or a development that requires an explanation.

Before a feature article is written, the article concept needs approval. Contact Ken Syke (663-1903) or Joe Quick (663-1902).

If approved, these are some considerations:

  • Keep the vocabulary simple; write for staff who don't know your school or department.
  • Pictures make the article more interesting to read; submit any photographs with the text.
  • Your draft of the article is due on the 5th day of the month.
  • Submit as an attachment via e-mail to Ken or Joe.
