"RESPECT TOKI" UPDATE
During this first year of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports the staff members are working with students to learn the behaviors that will make them successful learners. We expect everyone to Respect Education, Respect Everyone, and Respect the Environment.
Our social held just before Spring Break celebrated the improvements we have seen in being prepared, including using the planner. Some of the over 70% of our students who have always been in class received prizes in a drawing just before the social. We thank Gumby’s Pizza, Marcus Theatres, Vitense Golfland and Bogey’s Family Fun Park for their donations.
Staff will be attending the international PBIS conference in Illinois and visiting other Madison schools as we continue to develop our program. What can a parent do at home? Review the three areas of Respect Toki and talk about how it looks, sounds, and feels. You may also make donations for our incentives.
Please contact Patrick Godar at 204-4866 if you have any questions.
HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
Bring some French culture into your home this summer. Sixty French exchange
students from ECI are anxiously getting ready for their visit to the Madison
area for a three week stay in July or August. The host family helps select
the student that best fits their family by age, gender and interests.
This is a proven exchange program that has been visiting this area for
twenty years. All it takes is a little TLC, an interest in making a friend
from across the Atlantic and a desire to share each other’s culture.

What is a HALL SWEEP?
A tool enabling staff to help students be responsible for themselves
and get to class on time every period of every school day.
Who does HALL SWEEPs? Toki staff volunteers and administration.
When are HALL SWEEPs? After classes have started, Toki
staff will ‘sweep’ late students to a room and process with
individuals regarding their tardiness. Repeat offenders will call parents
and/or process further with administrators.
Can Parents Help? Yes! Discuss with your child the importance
of being on time and behaving appropriately in a public building, and
how it is important to you as an adult.
REMINDER: 8TH GRADE COMPLETION CEREMONY WED. JUNE 11
The 8th grade completion ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 11th
from 11:30-12:30 at Akira Toki Middle School . 8th Grade students should
start saving for the end of the year field trip to Mt Olympus on Thursday,
June 12th. Please look for the flyer of information that will be coming
in the mail.
‘WHEELIES’ are NOT allowed at TOKI!
Any type of skate is prohibited on MMSD school grounds. The wheels damage
our floors.
RESPECT TOKI – Keep Wheelies at home.
AV-EXPERT VOLUNTEER NEEDED
PARENTS! WE NEED an AV SPECIALIST who can volunteer some time (a Saturday?)
to evaluate and/or repair a number of old overhead projectors and VCRs.
We need to make way for a Book Room in the LMC, and have about a dozen
or so machines to look at. The district no longer provides repair services
for these machines, so we would appreciate any help you could offer. Please
call Ms. Verban at 204-4740 if you are able/willing to help.
WANTED: PARENT VOLUNTEER
. . . to be the TOKI NEWSLETTER EDITOR
for the 2008-2009 school year. Please contact Susan Palmer at palmersusanj@johndeere.com
PARENT PORTAL
Have you talked with your Toki Parent friends about the awesome help
the MMSD Infinite Campus can offer parents? If you haven’t registered,
please call Sherri in the Toki office at 204-4740.
Parents can track their child’s assignments, attendance, report
cards, and tardies to class with ease! Do keep in mind that Infinite Campus
is so new, not all staff are using the grade book embedded in IC to record
grades. However, many staff have made the switch and assignments are posted.
Also keep in mind that it takes time to post grades for assignments. Posting
can take up to 3-4 weeks. If you do have questions about whether or not
your child is completing specific assignments, please contact individual
teachers. If you have registered for Infinite Campus, just click on the
teacher’s name and an email will automatically pop up for you.
If you wish to know more about Infinite Campus, go to www.mmsd.org
, click on the Infinite Campus logo, and then click on “Infinite
Campus Information.” While this page is intended more for staff,
you may find the video to be helpful.
AFTER SCHOOL POLICY AT TOKI
ALL TOKI STUDENTS MUST LEAVE THE BUILDING by 2:40 p.m. Unless your child
is involved in a club after school that is sponsored by Toki or MSCR,
your child should be leaving the building promptly at 2:40. Students are
not allowed to “hang out” and/or wait for the 4:00 bus. This
is a safety issue as there is no adult supervision. Students may not wait
in the building for siblings in the elementary after-school program. We
strongly encourage Toki older siblings to join HOMEWORK CLUB each day
from 2:40-4:00 and participate in the Toki/MSCR RECREATION program from
4-5. Students waiting for siblings must meet them outside at a pre-designated
spot. Thanks for your help!
TRAFFIC SAFETY AT TOKI
Traffic safety is important for all our children attending school and
we would like to ask for your help with these efforts. Our biggest concern
at this time is traffic safety at or near the schools. We need to increase
our traffic safety awareness by obeying the following traffic laws:
1. **SLOW DOWN** Observe the speed limit. Check your
speedometer to see how fast you are really going. Slow down to 20 miles
per hour when passing a school at those times when children are going
to or from school, or are playing within the sidewalk area at or around
the school. Slow down to 20 miles per hour when passing an intersection
monitored by an adult crossing guard. If there are no posted 20 MPH signs,
the school zone speed is 15 MPH. Failure to comply with the posted school
zone speed limits could result in the issuance of a traffic citation in
the amount of $87.20 to $284.00.
2. **OBSERVE THE SIGNALS OF THE ADULT CROSSING GUARD**
Every driver approaching a school crossing which is controlled by an adult
school crossing guard must follow the directions of the school crossing
guard. If directed to stop, you must stop the vehicle not less than 10
feet nor more than 30 feet from the school crossing guard. You must remain
stopped until the children AND the crossing guard has returned to the
curb. Failure to stop or remain stopped at that time could result in the
issuance of a traffic citation in the amount of $77.20.
Young children have a difficult time judging the speed and distance of
an approaching vehicle. Remind your children to use the marked crosswalk
and to follow the directions of the crossing guard. Remember to set a
good example for your children, and if you cross with them, please use
the designated crosswalk and adhere to the directions of the crossing
guard.
3. **PARK ONLY IN AREAS WHERE IT IS LEGAL** Please observe
and adhere to the posted parking signs. Congestion in front of and around
the school reduces visibility and increases driver distractions. To help
alleviate the traffic congestion at or around schools, consider dropping
your children off a block or two from school and walk. It is illegal to
drop off students in the areas that are marked “No Stopping, Standing,
or Parking”. Failure to adhere to this posting may result in a $25.00
ticket.
Do not stop on or block a painted crosswalk when dropping your children
off at school. You may not park closer than 15 feet of a crosswalk, and
you may not block a private driveway when unloading or loading passengers,
nor block driveways.
4. **U-TURNS ARE PROHIBITED IN SCHOOL ZONES** Mid-block
turns to proceed in the opposite direction are illegal in school zones.
This increases the congestion and traffic hazards in school zones. Completion
of a mid-block turn/U-Turn in a school zone may result in a traffic ticket.
THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR CHILDREN!

DISTRICT NEWS
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA MRSA) infections
Community acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA MRSA)
infections are caused by bacteria that have developed resistance to the
antibiotics usually used to treat persons with staph infections. CA MRSA
is normally carried in the nose or on the skin of about 1% of the population.
CA MRSA usually cause mild skin infections such as abscesses or boils
but occasionally may cause more serious skin and soft tissue infections.
Serious infections are rare in healthy individuals.
This health issue has recently received considerable attention in the
media and is understandably a concern for staff and for parents.
