Dance and movement therapy. Lapham/Marquette has a special program offered in only to a few of the elementary schools in Madison. We have a contract for dance/movement therapy services from Hancock Center for Movement Arts and Therapies. Rena Kornblum, executive director of the center and a licensed dance/movement therapist, provides a violence prevention program to all our children. The program integrates body skills, such as the ability to self-settle, appropriate self-assertion and spatial awareness, with pro-social skills such as self-talk, empathy and anger management. Rena is probably best known for the 4B's, a 4 step calming technique, and the concept of space bubbles, which teaches the awareness of personal space. Along with other dance therapists she also offers group therapy for children who have experienced trauma and for children with social skills- and impulse control issues. This program has been able to continue thanks to a grant from the United Way and support from the PTG.
