AOL Press 2.0

Please Read: The Madison Metropolitan School District has not authored or developed this software, nor does the District support its use by those outside of the District. It is offered here for use by employees of the MMSD.

AOL Press 2.0 was created in 1997. It is quite old. It will not run on Mac OS 8.1 and higher. It may (or may not) run on Windows ME, 2000 or XP.

Macintosh:

AOL PRESS 2.0 WILL NOT RUN ON MAC OS 8.1 OR HIGHER
  1. In your browser, go to the "download from" address.
  2. The browser will ask you where to save the file. Choose a location and remember where you saved it.
  3. Once downloaded, run the file you just downloaded; setup is pretty automatic. Windows 95 will need to be restarted; Macs won't; I'm not sure about Win3.x.

If, during setup, you get the message "error: extract=-9", the file didn't completely download and you'll have to go back to step 1.

  4. Read the readme file listed above again.
  5. Run AOL Press 2.0. Before you do anything, go to Tools on the menu bar, then choose Preferences, then General. Under "Conform to:", pick HTML 3.2. Under "Multiple Spaces:", pick Collapsed. Click on OK.
  6. Start playing! There is a help section for those of you who like to read, but I find goofing around more fun. And, if you want to look at/edit the HTML directly, just go to Tools and choose Show HTML...

Also, if you open a file you've previously made in a different program, like Notepad, AOL Press will try to make it conform to HTML 3.2 (if it doesn't already). It does an OK job. You may have to go into Show HTML... and fix weird things.

We really hope you can use this program and that you find it useful. MIS doesn't support it, so if you have a problem, e-mail Chris at cburch@madison.k12.wi.us or the listserv and we'll try to figure it out.
