Course Description

Purpose

The purpose of the course is to develop skills that will enable participants to author, edit, debug, evaluate and publish Web pages on the MMSD web server. Participants will need to demonstrate accomplishment of the course objectives to be approved as Publishers. One can enroll in the course at the Staff & Organization Development course listing, if it is currently being offered.

Pre-Requisites

There are no pre-requisites for this course but the following suggestions are offered to help prospective participants decide if they are ready to take the course.

It is helpful if prospective Web Publishers...

• are comfortable saving and opening files.
• are comfortable surfing the web.
• have an idea about the Web site they would like to create.
• have some knowledge of HTML. This is desirable but not necessary.
• have the ability to be an independent learner and problem solver.

Web Publishing carries with it a time commitment. Web Publishers will need to commit time to publish Web pages and to work with Authors and other Publishers.

Objectives

• To be able to use District Guidelines to design, create and publish Web pages which contain:
  • unordered and ordered lists.
  • internal links.
  • tables.
  • images of varying sizes and uses.
  • forms.
  • page hit counters.
  • image maps (optional).
• To exhibit knowledge of and adherence to copyright laws relating to electronic text and graphics.
• To be able to evaluate Web pages to ensure they
  • meet District policy.
  • meet District Guidelines for Web Pages.
  • contain only appropriate links.
  • are proofread (fact checking, link checking, spell checking, etc.).
• To navigate directories.
• To be able to use FTP as part of the MMSD publishing process.
• To be able to "debug" Web pages submitted for publishing.
• To be able to maintain existing Web pages on the MMSD Web server(s) including
  • updating Web pages.
  • removing Web pages.
  • communicating with Web page authors.
